Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope you had a relaxing and wonderful holiday break and are looking forward to a fabulous 2008. There are a lot of fun and exciting activities coming up at Chadwick and the CPA is working hard to ensure these next few months go smoothly.

First of all, we would like to give a big thank you to Kathryn Hansen, Rachel Harris and all the volunteers who helped with the Village holiday activities. The kids had a wonderful time and it was the perfect send-off for the winter break!

Please be advised that the nomination process for the 2008-2009 CPA Board will be starting in January. Anyone interested in being considered for a board position can fill out a nominating form or contact Julie Long or Linda Calhoun. Nominating forms will be available online in January and will be sent home to Village families in the WWW. They will also be available in the reception office in Julie Long’s mailbox. Please contact Julie or Linda for more information or if you have any questions.

Spring Event is gearing up. The theme this year is “In Your Wildest Dreams,” and the event will be held on campus on May 10, 2008. Donation requests will be sent out shortly; please be thinking about any contacts you may have for that special donation, especially those that fit this year’s theme. Of course, all donations are needed and appreciated! If anyone is interested in helping with the event, please contact Tracy Ferrara.

Chadwick continues to show its charitable spirit through giving. This year the Scrip program donated $850 to the Toberman Neighborhood Center for the holidays through our holiday gift card program. Thank you to everyone who participated! Toberman was appreciative of having the option for Scrip this year because they were able to buy gift cards for the older kids so there was something for everyone. This program will is available throughout the year, so if you would like to purchase a Scrip gift certificate for Toberman, or for anyone else at Chadwick or outside of Chadwick, contact Jane Carter.

Friends of the Library

Online Research Resources
Has your child ever come to you with a last-minute homework assignment when you know that the library is closed? Look no further! The Chadwick library subscribes to over 18 online databases provided, in part, by the Friends of the Library.

Using these valuable databases, students and parents can access extensive and reliable full-text research material from home. In addition to the entire text of the World Book and Britannica encyclopedias, the library also offers:

  • Discovery Streaming Online: Our newest database, this is a searchable media library with more than 50,000 video segments from full-length educational videos. Created by the Discovery Channel, this is a great resource for K-12 presentations!
  • ProQuest History Study Center: A collection of primary and secondary sources on global history from ancient times to the present day. Includes extensive study units organized by major topic
  • Opposing Viewpoints: Topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles on a wide variety of current social and political issues and controversial topics.
  • JSTOR: The complete archives of more than 700 university-level journals from all different disciplines
  • Oxford African American Studies Center: A full-text reference database focusing on the lives and events which have shaped African American and African history and culture
  • AccessScience: The full text of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, including access to over 7,000 articles, web links, and research/news updates

The library also has purchased several e-reference books, including the Encyclopedia of Modern Asia, the Encyclopedia of World Biography, History Behind the Headlines, and the Encyclopedia of Islam and the Muslim World. Students are automatically "logged in" to these reference tools when connecting to the Internet through Chadwick's network. They can also access the tools from home using passwords and URLs provided by the library.

Middle & Upper School Spring Book Talks
Don’t forget, Spring Book Talks are scheduled for March 18 - 20, 2008.  If anyone would like to give a Book Talk to Middle or Upper school students, please contact either Cara Belcher or Tamara Powers.

Dolphin Booster Club News

What a terrific year our Chadwick athletes experienced in 2007. The fall season barely ended when winter sports kicked off in high gear. All winter sports teams train over the holiday breaks, and several take road trips, allowing teams to gain greater experience outside their league, develop skills and bond as a unit. Families who are able to join their son's or daughter’s team on the road also develop friendships with other families, taking home memories they will treasure forever.

Chadwick athletics provides every participant a chance to develop not only athletic prowess, but equally valuable lifetime friendships and leadership skills. Teams provide a natural framework for athletes to become role models. Seniors who participate on the same team as freshmen have an awesome opportunity to teach teammates not only about their sport, but about success and failure from the perspective of one who has “been there." Although academics remain the first priority to every Chadwick athlete, those who truly love their sport and the challenge of competition understand the mental and physical toughness it takes to be successful — not only on the field, in the pool or on the track, but in the classroom and beyond the gates of our school.

As 2008 takes off, we wish success to all who participate in our athletic program. We hope you take the chance to experience a new sport, skill or opportunity. As Wayne Gretzky, the most successful professional hockey player of all time, once said, ”You will always miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.”  Taking the "shot” can be as complex as incorporating the new play into your game, pushing yourself a bit harder toward something resisted in the past, or as simple as coming out to a new sporting event at Chadwick to cheer on our Chadwick Dolphins. We promise you a spirit you will find contagious!

We thank you for your support over the past year and look forward to seeing you at the many games ahead!
